In October 2023, we held a trial camp for our Western Australia XYY families to connect in a non-judgmental environment. Our families spent three nights and four days on a beautiful camp site called Lions Myalup Pines Cottages.
This was an opportunity to create a safe space for these families to share their lived experiences and stories over the course of four days. Even though some of us had met before and some of us were meeting for the first time, we all found a common connection with each other and had a very memorable time.
We felt very privileged to have the support of our local Lions, Lions Club of Mandurah, Lions Club of Rockingham and Lions Club of Falcon, all donating towards this amazing camp and our local Lakelands community.
On our first night after unpacking and settling in, we were joined by the Lions Club of Mandurah, who cooked a delicious homemade dinner. As busy families, it was so heartfelt to have someone treat us like this.
On our 3rd day, we had the Lions Club of Rockingham join us, they cooked an amazing lunch BBQ and we enjoyed some lawn games while sharing stories.
In our first few days, we took the time to unwind, let go of the daily routines, and get to know each other. With no real pressures or expectations, we enjoyed each other’s company with amazing food and activities for all of us to engage in and just let the time disappear. As we aim to provide a supportive environment for families rather than imposing strict schedules that could stress our boys.
